How to use the fretboard diagram

When using guitar fretboard diagrams like the one we use in our app, it is important to note that the Thickest string is on the bottom of the diagram. This is called the low E string, it is called this because it is the lowest note on the guitar in pitch. In reality the guitar on your knee has this same string on top. However it is common to call this string the low E.

Push the Next button on the right hand corner of our fretboard diagram at the top of this page to progress through the lesson.

Naming the strings

From Thick to thin string we start with the
- low E (thickest string)
- A
- D
- G
- B
- high E
(thinnest string)

So you read the diagram bottom up, and you play it on your guitar top down. It's a bit weird at first but you'll soon get used to it.
